Members & Spirituality

The vocation, promises, and spiritual rhythm of life shared by the Missionaries of Peace.

Membership

Called, discerned, and received into the community

Members of the association are those who have completed the necessary period of initial probation and discernment, have been accepted for membership by the majority vote of the existing members, and have made the public promise of commitment to the Missionaries of Peace.

Once accepted, members make their public promise to the community — preferably on the 13th of May, the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima — to observe the Statutes of the association and to live according to its spirit. The promise is received by the Diocesan Bishop or the Superior General, or by another priest designated by him.

The public promise

Chastity, poverty, and obedience

The members profess to God the promises of chastity, poverty, and obedience, to give even greater stability and significance to their commitment. The practice of these three evangelical counsels, sealed by public promise, gives stability, availability, and purpose to the life of the members.

Our spirituality

A life shaped by the Gospel and the Church

The spirituality of the Society finds its expression in community life, focused on living the Gospel and being totally faithful to the teachings of the Church as expressed by the Holy Father and the Diocesan Bishop in communion with him. Regular community meetings are arranged to help the members reflect on the role and mission of the association and of its individual members.

Their community life shows how they have rejected the false values of the world — sacrificing their lives and possessions to be missionaries of the Church, with a special devotion to the Holy Family, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph. They work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, without recoiling before weariness or difficulty. In community they respect one another, observing confidentiality on all that concerns those they serve and the members of the community.

Rhythm of prayer & formation

The practices that sustain the common life

Prayer in common

Prayer in common is a source of life for each member, as he gathers strength to carry out the Lord's work. In consultation with the Spiritual Counsellor, the community draws up a prayer schedule to which all adhere, except for urgent matters that cannot be delayed.

Weekly study

Because true mission work requires knowledge of the teachings of Christ and of the Church, a weekly study period is set aside, so the members grow in faith and are better prepared to pass it on to others by word and deed.

Monthly recollection

A monthly recollection is part of the lifestyle of the members, renewing the interior life and refreshing their dedication to the mission of peace.

Annual retreat

A retreat of five full days is mandatory for the members each year, undertaken in consultation with the Local Superior.
